Day 1 in The Walk To Beat Polio

When Hans left Budapest on Saturday October 4 for Seville, Spain it was raining steadily.

"It seems like a fitting way to leave Central Europe since the rain followed us for three weeks through Budapest, Vienna and Prague," he wrote.

Unfortunately the continuous cold and damp weather that plagued us for three weeks also left Hans with a cold just four days before his scheduled start to the Walk. Colds pretty much come and go at their own pace but we treated his symptoms anyway as best we could with salt gargles and Ibuprofen. Since he's in excellent physical shape he's bouncing back very quickly and is off and walking on Monday October 6th just as planned. He writes:

"It is 8:00 a.m. here and I will definitely leave a bit later this morning. Am feeling about 98 per cent and getting better all the time. I may not wait until 11:00 a.m. to get the sello at the cathedral since the high here today and tomorrow will be 28C. I don't want to walk in the main heat of the day.

Had a good day yesterday touring the city which is beautiful but also a place where it is very easy to get lost. Getting out of the city and into the country will be a bit of a challenge as there are very few 'Camino' signs.

I will try my best to stay in touch but I suspect that there might be a shortage of places to email until I hit some of the larger towns and cities along the route."

Hans - xplornet is experiencing intermittent email problems as of 2:30 p.m. Tuesday so you may have difficulty emailing. If so, you can use the comment box in our blog like I'm doing to send notes.

Hans - it's Wednesday morning and xplornet is still having webmail and email problems. They hope to have it fixed by 2 pm this afternoon. Wow. Our days are full of strange sights and long hours. In the bus every morning at 7:00, and never home before 5:00. The summer palace was built by Rama V to commemorate the village where he met his wife. How romantic is that! The trouble with winter is…

The trouble with winters here is that they can be incredibly brutal. This is especially true when your driveway is 400' long, oriented east-west, and invitingly open to the howling north wind. Last night the afore-mentioned wind was an unwelcome escort on my drive home late in the evening. All the way home I contemplated whether or not I should risk driving my car down the driveway and into the garage, where it might get trapped overnight. I decided not to risk it. From the head of the driveway I phoned Hans to say I was leaving the car on the road, loaded up my stuff, wound my scarf around my head to ward off the wind, and opened the door. Like a spinnaker, it caught the wind and creaked alarmingly before I wrestled it closed again. I proceeded more cautiously. The driveway was already starting to bulk up with mogul-like drifts and Hans had opened the gate for me – a precaution when drifts in the drive are a possibility. "The Party"

If you've seen the movie "The Party" with Peter Sellers, you'll be able to visualize the scene at dinner this evening. We had Rock Cornish Game Hens. Just as I was critizing someone else for their bad table manners, my cornish hen flew off my plate and skittered across the table. Bits of chicken went flying in all directions.
