House Blessing

Our new friends Dave and Baby live next door to Fed and Anna, and have been neighbours and close friends for 30 years. It's the same with the rest of the street - all have become close friends as their children grew up together and they celebrate all they joys and sorrows as a group.

That Friday evening, one of the neighbours was celebrating a move into a new house within walking distance of their former neighbourhood. As is their custom, everyone is welcome. Children and unexpected guests included.

We were driven, but we passed other neighbours along the way and after getting slighly lost - which turned into an occasion for laughter and fun instead of anger and frustration - we found the house and gathered on the deck. Ada the hostess was picking up her husband at the airport but, again as is their custom, the friends made themselves at home and food began piling up on the table.

Just to keep track. We had lunch on the plane, a second lunch in the restaurant with the Rotarians, a snack after we woke up from our nap, and now, a sumptuous feast of shrimp, crab, fish, glass noodles, fried rice, chicken, calamari. I think there was more but you get the picture. Frightened of not fitting into the only 3 tops I had with me, I had no problem eating sparingly.

The house was grand. Four bedrooms, each with its own attached b athroom. The master suite of course had a phenomenal granite bathroom and a small balcony overlooking the pool. The balcony holds a treadmill and you can practically jump into the pool directly below.

When we got home, Baby check with the airport a final time but alas, not only hadn't the suitcases arrived but Cathay Pacific had no idea where they were. And Air CAnada hadn't replied to their request for help so for all we knew, the bags were still sitting in Calgary.

*sigh*
